Margarita Nelken

Margarita Nelken (1894-1968) was one of the most imporant social and political activisists in Spain in the early twentieth century. Sister of Carmen Eva Nelken ("Magda Donato"), she is most well-known today as a feminist and militant socialist and one of Spain's first female parliamentarians of the Second Republic. Her social treatise, La condición social de la mujer en España (1919), is a striking indictment of the inferior position that was imposed on Spanish women, and she fought during her life to better that situation. She went into exile after the Civil War and lived the rest of her life in Mexico. Her work is not under public domain, so please consult the Texts page for titles and contact me for PDFs.

I've written an article comparing a selection of Nelken's texts with those of Blanca de los Ríos. Consult it below.
