The Last of the Mohicans at Loyola

Published in 1826 by Carey & Lea of Philadelphia.

1859 Edition: acquired by Loyola in 1933. First recorded check out date is January 1959 and most consistently checked out between the first recorded check out date and the late 1980’s. This edition was initially published as a work of literature meant for leisure reading; when acquired by Loyola, used for academic purposes. Handwritten notes suggest that the readers of the book focused on God and poetry, referring to the book in a religious manner.

1900z Edition: first recorded check out date is August 1972 and most frequently checked out in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s; surge again in the early 1990’s, but no recorded check out dates since 1995. When first published, most likely read for pleasure; handwritten notes dating back to 1895 indicate that the book was not read for academic purposes. While at Loyola, use by Loyola faculty (in 1972) suggests that the book was used academically.

1932 Edition: first recorded check out date is May 1994 and only checked out twice. Illustrated cover and color illustrations within the book suggest that it was published mainly for pleasure reading and to also introduce the public to the classics. Either acquired later on in Loyola’s history or not regarded as an edition to use for academic purposes.

1936 Edition: first recorded check out date is October 1971 and most frequently checked out throughout the 1970’s; consistently checked out again in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s but not really checked out anymore. Book binding and preface suggest that the book was first published for pleasure reading and to mimic the editions of other classic novels. Handwritten notes (following the book’s setting and use of nature) and faculty use (in both 1979 and 1993) suggest that the book was definitely used academically at Loyola.

1947 Edition: first recorded check out date is December 1995 and only checked out three times. Like the 1932 and 1936 editions, this edition also includes illustrations and regards the book as a classic novel, suggesting that this edition was published for leisure reading or to get people to read classic novels. Because the book has only been checked out three times, it is unclear whether or not the book was read for academic or pleasure purposes at Loyola.

1962 Edition: first recorded check out date is January 1999 and most frequently checked out in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s. Because it is marked as a “Signet Classic,” probably published for a non-academic audience, although its frequent use at Loyola in the late 1990’s suggests that the book was used for academic purposes (possibly assigned for classes).

1963 Edition: first recorded check out date is March 1967 and most frequently checked out in the 1970’s and 1980’s. Used by Father John R. Donahue in 1973 and Professor Mair sometime between 1980 and 1982 for a “January Term Reserve,” suggesting that these faculty members read the book academically. Handwritten account of page numbers at the back of the book also points towards academic purposes, for the penciled-in notes focus on the religious and racial aspects of the novel, fitting to the late 1960’s and 1970’s and the civil rights movement. 1983 Edition: first recorded check out date is April 1986 and has been steadily checked out throughout the late 1980’s and the 1990’s; most recently checked out 2005. Faculty use in 1992 and 1993 and plain blue cover suggests that the book was used academically at Loyola.
