OF THE
SECRETARY
HE "Society for the History of the Germans in Mary-
land" met during the last year, viz: February 1889-'90
in nine regular monthly sessions.
The average attendance at these meetings on the
part of its active members was twelve.
Early in the year, the Society, through the agency of its
Executive Committee, published and distributed among the
members and Sister Societies its
THIRD ANNUAL REPORT,
a document comprising 59 printed pages, and containing,
besides the Secretary's and Treasurer's Reports, valuable histor-
ical articles, contributed by PROF. O. SEIDENSTICKER, L. P.
HENNIGHAUSEN, Esq., and COL. VON STAMP.
During the year the Society was
LEGALLY INCORPORATED
according to the laws of the State of Maryland, under the
title: "The Society for the History of the Germans in
Maryland."
THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES
were prepared for and read at the different meetings of the
Society during the past year.
1. Extracts of letters from Governor Horatio Sharpe,
addressed to Lord Baltimore in the year 1754 and referring
to the large German population, yea, predominating German

character of Baltimore town, even at that early date of its
existence.
2. "The first German Colony in Pennsylvania." Both
these articles were by L. P. HENNIGHAUSEN, Esq.
3. "The origin of the Golden Rose."
4. "The Grand Duchy of Luxemburg."
5. "The relation of the impression upon ancient coin,
to the escutcheons found upon the Coats of Arms."
The above three articles were furnished by M®. I. LWEN-
THAL.
6. "The arrest and trial of J. J. D. Smyth, an English
Royalist, by German citizens of Frederick-town, during the
revolutionary times of 1775.
7. "Sketch of life and labors of the eminent Aegyptol-
ogist, Rev. Dr. S. Seyffarth."
These last two articles were translated and compiled by
our worthy President, the REV. J. G. MO®RIS, D. D.
DONATIONS.

The Society in its October meeting resolved to adopt and
celebrate in an appropriate manner the 6th of October as
THE GERMAN DAY,
it being the anniversary day of the landing of the first German

Colony on our shores in 1683, and adopted as such by many
German Societies throughout our land.
The Society owes thanks to the proprietors of the "German
Correspondent" and the "Baltimore Journal" for gratuitous
furnishing of their respective daily papers.
The active membership at the close of the third year
numbered 77 members. During the past year there were re-
moved by death three, viz: MESSRS.

C. F. MATHIEU.
Six members
resigned their membership, whilst the names of' three were
dropped from the list for sufficient reason. One was trans-
ferred from active membership to that of a corresponding
member.
Twelve new active members were added during the year,
leaving at the close the names of 76 active members on
the list.
