TO OUR READERS
In years past the Society for the History of the Germans in Maryland has
been frequently chided for not providing enough tools for family research to its
members and nation-wide readership. That such a reproach was not entirely
justified becomes evident upon perusing earlier issues of The Report. In order
to prove that much genealogical information has been garnered (though often
hidden) in most issues, William T. Snyder began to compile a complete bibli-
ography of all items contained in previous Reports, including an index to all
obituary notices. On February 23, 1981 Bill Snyder was torn from his manifold
activities by sudden death. He had been the Chairman of our Executive Com-
mittee since 1965, and in that capacity was instrumental in formulating our
publishing activities. The draft of his bibliography and index is currently being
edited for The Report 39 which will be a tribute to him and to the legacy he
has left to all whose life was enriched by his example of courage and love.
The present Report 38 was in preparation when Bill Snyder left us. In
fact, he was going to announce this special, genealogically-oriented issue at our
Annual Meeting on February 25, 1981.
The Table of Contents speaks for itself. For the first time an inventory
of extant German church records in Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia will
be available to researchers. The listing of colonial German immigrants to Georgia
goes beyond localized interests. Descendants may be found today in every state
of the Union. Lastly, the first half of the abstracted passenger lists of every
ship carrying German immigrants into the port of Baltimore in 1854, peak year
of 19th century immigration from Central Europe, appears in this issue. The
remaining lists will be published in The Report 39.
