THE REPORT OF THE SECRETARY
By a unanimous decision the Executive Committee of the Society for
the History of the Germans in Maryland approved in 1973 the suggestion
of the editor of The Report to devote the 1975 issue to themes of the
American Revolution. In presenting The Report 36 the Society is hopeful
that the articles contributed by five authors will shed some new light on
the share of German-Americans in the trials and the glories of the birth
of our Nation.
Shortly before this issue of The Report went to the printer, we were
saddened by the news that our long-time member, Professor Taylor Starck
died in Hyannis, Massachusetts at the age of 84. A brief and hurried
memorial notice would not adequately define the stature of this extra-
ordinary man. A fitting tribute shall appear in The Report 37.
We are pleased to learn that libraries which subscribe to The Report
have begun to note the sub-title, Journal of German-American History, in
their public catalogs. This sub-title was added to our publication, beginning
with The Report 33.
Since the publication of the last Report in 1972, the German Baroque
Collection of our President, Professor Harold Jantz, has been made avail-
able to the world of research through microfilm publication. The Harold
Jantz Collection contains principally material from the Baroque period,
but including some pre-Baroque and post-Baroque material. This valuable
collection has hitherto been little known. Only a few iniates—students and
friends of Professor Jantz had a view of the hidden treasures of his collec-
tion. A printed and bound bibliography of the Jantz Collection on micro-
film appeared last year in three volumes.
The guest speakers at the Annual Dinner Meeting of the Society, which
is traditionally held in February of each year, were:
1973
