THE REPORT
The Society for the History of the Germans in Maryland is once more
issuing a Report, the Thirty-First, in our series. For over eight decades
the Society has held to its original purpose of publishing and preserving
historical material related to the immigration and activities of Americans
of German descent not only in the Free State of Maryland but also in the
adjoining states. In recent years the articles and monographs contributed
by scholars and interested laymen have frequently reached beyond the
limits of Maryland's borders and have assumed somewhat of a national
scope.
At the Seventy-fifth Annual Meeting and Dinner on February 24, 1961,
the members expressed the strong desire to hold an appropriate celebration
to mark the 75th Anniversary of the existence of the Society, the only one
of its kind in the United States. An Anniversary Committee, consisting
of William T. Snyder, Pastor Fritz O. Evers, Otto H. Franke, Francis W.
Pramschufer, Sr., and C. William Schneidereith made preparations for such
a celebration in the Fall of 1961. On October 8, 1961 the Seventy-fifth
Anniversary Celebration was held in the Auditorium of the Maryland
Historical Society to which the general public was invited. After Pastor
Edward F. Engelbert spoke the Invocation, the Honorable George L. Rad-
cliffe, President of the Maryland Historical Society, commended, in glowing
words of praise, the Society for its work in collecting, preserving and pub-
lishing material relative to the activities of Americans of German descent.
Then Professor A. E. Zucker, our President, introduced Dieter Cunz,
Chairman of the Department of German, Ohio State University, who gave
a most stimulating and informative address on "The Germans in Mary-
land." Dr. Cunz, author of The Maryland Germans (Princeton, 1948),
was "For many years the inspiration and the prime mover of the activities
and growth of the Society." In recognition of his never-ending efforts and
his wholehearted devotion to the Society for the History of the Germans
in Maryland, Professor Cunz was elected in 1958 to lifetime membership
in the Society.
Since the publication of the last Report the guest speakers at the
Annual Meetings of the Society were:
1960 Professor Augustus J. Prahl (University of Maryland)
"Alexander von Humboldt"
1961 Charles F. Stein (Author of The History of Calvert County)
"German Heritage of Colonial Maryland"
1962 Professor A. E. Zucker (University of Maryland)
"General de Kalb and His Time"
1963 Professor George F. Jones (University of Maryland)
"The Colonial Germans in Georgia"
Several Reports in the past have been made possible through generous
contributions on the part of members of the Society. The following
members of the Society, in response to a drive for funds, contributed money
in support of the publication of this Report: A. P. Backhaus, W. C. Birely,
Prof. D. Cunz, Pastor E. F. Engelbert, Pastor F. O. Evers, E. F. Fadum,
