Meike's Narrative

Mrs. Bosley and I decided to read Tatiana de Rosnay’s novel Sarah’s Key. The novel is both interesting and moving, and we both enjoyed reading it. The setting of the novel is Paris. Therefore, the novel includes a lot of French words. Since I know some French and am usually quite good at figuring out how to pronounce a word, I told Mrs. Bosley about the pronunciation and the meaning of the French words, while she helped me out with the English words I did not know. This made me feel pretty comfortable.

Due to her career as a certified nurse, Mrs. Bosley is very eager to get all the details while she is reading something. I, on the other hand, tend to rush through descriptions and often skip whole sentences. Since we decided to read to each other aloud, we both had to learn how to deal with a different pace of reading.

It was also pretty hard for Mrs. Bosley to stick to the amount of reading we had agreed on for the next week. She usually read ahead and even managed to finish the novel on her own. I still remember when she told me she could not possibly have waited for us to come back. She needed to know what happened to the poor children in the book. But she was still really happy to read it with me from the point where we had stopped and to walk me through all the important events.

Reading with Mrs. Bosley was a lot of fun – even more so because our meetings were not only about the novel and its contents. The novel became our means to communicate with each other and created a basis for discussion.
